Crossed Eyes: Introduction, Symptoms and Treatments in 2021

Crossed eye disorder is also known as Strabismus. Basically, strabismus is an eye disorder in which proper alignment of eyes is not there while looking at an object. Crossed eyes or Strabismus is a condition of the eye in which eyes do not look in exactly the same direction at the same time due to poor eye muscle control. In simpler words, when eyes are not able to line up properly then the problem of cross-eye may occur.

Causes of cross-eyes

There can be different reasons for crossed eyes and also it seems that this kind of disorder of eye may get transferred due to family or heritage. Cross eyes mainly occur-
  • Due to damage of the eye nerve.
  • Due to weakened muscle control of the eye.
  • Occur in person due to the misery of farsightedness.
  • Occur in person due to adversity of any kind of vision loss or lazy eye.
  • Occur in a person having a brain disorder or a brain tumor or any kind of head injury.
  • A person having diabetes is at risk of crossed eyes.



Symptoms of cross-eyes

The most common symptom of crossed eyes is when the alignment of eyes varies in different directions at the same time. It is more often noticed in children which if identified in the early stage can be easily prevented. Major clues or indication of crossed eyes are


  • The motion of the eyes does not occur unitedly.
  • In bright sunlight, one eye may get closed called squinting of an eye.
  • Depth perception is limited.
  • Eye strain, headache, double vision, or blurred vision can also add to crossed eyes symptoms.



Classification of Crossed Eyes

According to deviation in direction, it can be classified as:-


  • Esotropia or convergent strabismus – it involves turning in of eye with respect to the other eye.
  • Exotropia or divergent strabismus – it involves turning out of the eye with respect to another eye.
  • Hypertropia strabismus – it involves turning up of one eye with respect to another eye.
  • Hypotropia strabismus – it involves turning down of one eye with respect to another eye.

Treatments of crossed eyes

Mainly, poor eye muscle control needs to be treated in order to improve or to put up eyes together.  Different treatments are there to improve the condition of the eye which can be given alone or in combination depending on type and causes of strabismus are:-


  • One can prefer eyeglasses or contact lenses having crossed eyes due to farsightedness.
  • Another option to go for is eye drops for those having temporary blurred vision or vision loss.
  • Surgery is another option for people severely affected by crossed eyes or are at high risk.
